A Very Special Valentine’s Gift To You

Um. So.

*deep breath*

I’m doing another book giveaway.

*long pause*

Only this time, I’m giving away MY OWN BOOK.

I KNOW!!! How fun is that?

Nope, I haven’t signed any contracts with any major publishing houses. What’s happened is this: My first novel, The Clearing, never sold to publishers. No matter how hard I tried. Oh, we got close. We got SOOO close. Editors showed interest, I went to acquisitions a time or two, but it never panned out. (This is actually a very common story among first-time authors, especially with their first novels, which is why I’m not too broken up about it.)

So the other day, I sent an email to my fabulous agent to confirm that we had exhausted our submission list and would be “shelving” (as we in the business call it) (as if I am cool enough to consider myself “in the business”) the book.

She said, Why yes, all that is true.

And I said, So can I give away some copies of the book then?

And she said, Why yes, you certainly can, and if you want you can even self-publish the book and SELL IT.

Very shortly, I’ll be publishing my first novel, The Clearing, as a Kindle book! Which means it will be available for purchase for any and all who would like to read it!

But I’m also going to get a few hard copies of The Clearing published as well, for those who don’t have e-readers (like myself). And you know what I’m going to do with those hard copies?

Right here. Right here on this blog. This blog you’re reading right this minute.

If you’re not familiar with The Clearing and would like to read a plot summary to see if it’s something you might like to win (and/or buy), please click here and you’ll be directed to my “Novels” page. There, you’ll find a summary of The Clearing.

  1. I will be back to enter this very cool contest after I have updated my blog and spread the word. I’m sorry it’s not going through a big publisher, but I’m still super excited to have a chance at reading it! πŸ™‚

  2. Anne I read the excerpt from you book and it sounds very intriguing! I can’t wait to read it!

  3. Anne, I am so impressed with you and your writing! I am SUPER excited about your 1st novel – you give me a good reason to make sure I have a new book to read on the metro to and from work in the D.C. metro area~ I HOPE I WIN! πŸ˜€ Congrats! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store!

  4. While I’m sorry to hear that submissions didn’t pan out, I AM happy to hear about this! I’m looking forward to reading THE CLEARING, whether I win a copy or not. πŸ™‚

  5. I am SO EXCITED to finally read this book! I’ve been waiting for it….checking the blog every day (yes, I’m one of the 50 stalkers) and this entry made me smile!
Much love to you, Rob and Mags….let me know if you need dinner again.

  6. I’m sorry they’re shelving it but it’s still pretty awesome that you’re allowed to sell it as an eBook.

I can’t wait to read it either way!

  7. What a completely awesome idea! Bravo to you for doing this! I’ve been thinking about it myself but haven’t had the courage. Of course I’ll support you completely!!! In fact, I’ll blog about it today. +21 for me! I’d love to win a hard copy. You rock!

  8. I’m sorry it’s getting shelved, but you are taking it better than I think I would. Thank you for a great example. Who knows, it might do amazing on Kindle and it won’t matter anyway.

I can’t wait to get a chance to read your book!

  9. So excited to have a chance to win a copy! I’ve been curious about your novel. So bummed about acquisitions going south. That happened to me twice so far! ARGH!

Nice to see a silver lining I hand’t thought of. Makes the whole process so much less stressful!

    Will Tweet!

    Edge of Your Seat Romance

  10. I’m so excited! I will definitely be buying the kindle version when it comes out. Keep us posted, I’m first in line!

  11. I will download your book as soon as it available, Anne. The publishing world is so much in a storm right now due to economic woes and changing technology that your story is too often repeated even for great books. James Joyce and T.S. Elliot both had to be self-publish in a sense to get started. I’m wishing you great fortune. Roland

  12. Anne, your book sounds great. I’m surprised some publisher didn’t snatch it up, but there are plenty of authors who have self-published and then gone on to great success, and something tells me you are going to be one of them. I would buy myself the Kindle version if I actually owned one, but I don’t so I’ll have to enter the giveaway and keep my fingers crossed.

  13. This. Is. Awesome! You’re a writer and you’re doing what we should be doing…reaching readers! I’m so happy for you. These days there are so many opportunities for writers. Good for you for carving your own path. Ok, off to fill out the form!

  14. I don’t need to win because I will BUY your book! I’m so excited for you! If you have any questions or need any help, don’t hesitate to holler. πŸ™‚

  15. Hi! your book sounds very interesting! I am now following you πŸ˜€ but I have to say, your plot summary will make me buy it if I don’t win it πŸ™‚ Congrats on your publishing your book!

  16. This is awesome! I just read the pitch on your Novels page and was blown away. I’ll definitely be buying this when you make it available! Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. Your novel, The Clearing, sounds so interesting I can’t wait to read it. Here’s hoping I can win a copy!!

  18. I was away all weekend and I missed this announcement! All I have to say is: YAY! I’m really glad you decided to do this, and that your agent is behind it! I have Kindle on my computer so if I don’t win, I’ll still be able to read it. Uh… not that that’s a good excuse for me not to win…

  19. The Clearing sounds like an interesting book, I would really love to win it! I would jump up and down and go Squeeeeee a lot!

  20. Anne,

Oooh I really hope I win! I have very very severe ( & I mean SEVERE) dental problems which I can’t afford to pay for, can’t get financing, have searched high & low for any assistance, went to the dental college & was told my problems are “beyond the dental students’ abilities”, I’ve written letters to dentists, to talk show hosts, to anyone, every possible outlet, I’ve even begged & offered to clean toilets…..all to no avail. So, since I refuse to leave the house looking like this & am in severe 24/7 excrutiating, unbearable pain which makes me not want to leave home, I do ALOT of reading……roughly 6 books per week (most of them over & over as I can’t afford new ones) , so if I won this!………It would really make my day because it’s almost like getting to go somewhere new & make a new friend. As you can tell, I don’t get many new ones (ha ha) Anyway, thank you so much for the opportunity to win this &, hopefully pretty soon I’ll get enough money rounded up so that I can purchase Synthesis & read it too. They both sound awesome!! I wish you the very best & that you prosper as a new “best selling author”!!

    A new fan,
    Danielle Hogan

  21. Anne – I cannot wait to read the book!! How exciting! My fiance has a Nook, not a Kindle . . . will we be able to read it on his Nook as well? I can’t wait!

  22. I am SO off to win a copy of this book!! As a self-pubbed author, I know how much fun this is going to be for you to start sharing your book with the masses – it’s exciting!! And I want to suport that – plus, I want to laugh in the face of all the publishers who passed it up. Mwahahaha… just kidding. I’m not really that vindictive. (Or am I?) Either way, this is going to be a FUN journey for you! Enjoy every minute of it!! πŸ™‚
